Adelphi has appointed Anne M. Mungai, PhD, as its associate provost for strategic initiatives and graduate studies. Dr. Mungai will be responsible for coordinating academic strategic initiatives, developing academic-community partnerships, and supporting faculty diversity initiatives and faculty training and recognition.
Overseeing all of these educational matters you will find the Office of the Provost and executive vice president of academic affairs. In other words, you could say the provost serves as the chief academic officer of Adelphi University—and is supported by a team of associate provosts and other academic affairs professionals dedicated to ensuring Adelphi students receive a world-class education.
About the Provost: Meet Dr. Steve Everett
An accomplished composer, conductor and professor of music, Dr. Everett joined Adelphi University in 2018. Prior to that, he was a dean at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where he oversaw four schools with numerous programs, the Gallery 400 art gallery, the renowned Jane Addams Hull-House Museum and the UIC Innovation Center—an interdisciplinary research center and incubation hub that bridges research and education with industry. Before UIC, he was at Emory University in Atlanta for 23 years, serving in numerous roles, including professor of music and assistant vice provost for academic affairs.
Prior to Adelphi, I served for five years as Dean of the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) where I oversaw programs in architecture, graphic and industrial design, new media, music, theatre, studio art, art history, art education, museum studies, and interdisciplinary studies. I was able to substantially increase the number of underrepresented faculty and staff in the college and expand the network of alumni relationships, drastically increased sponsored research, individual philanthropy, and foundation grants. I also coordinated the numerous community-engaged activities of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Gallery400 Contemporary Art Gallery, and oversaw activities at the UIC Innovation Center – a research center cosponsored with the Colleges of Medicine, Engineering, and Business.
As Dean, I secured the college’s first seven figure donor gift for student scholarships, created a digital media and instructional technology studio, launched a new B.A. in Design and a new B.A. in Integrated Arts, and started a joint M.A. degree with Art and Computer Science. I led an international architect competition and the selection of OMA Architects for a $100M performing arts center to be built on campus.
For 23 years prior to UIC, I was a Professor of Music at Emory University and served in a number of senior administrative positions, including Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Director of the Provost’s Center for Faculty Development and Excellence, Director of the Center for Humanistic Inquiry, Chair of the Department of Music, Founding Director of the Music-Audio Research Center, and was elected by the faculty as President of the University Senate and Chair of the Faculty Council, the two principal governance committees of the university addressing concerns of all 1255 faculty.
At Emory, I led the creation of several major new arts initiatives including founding the Center for Creativity & Arts and design and fund-raising for the $45M Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. I received a $500K grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation to establish an artist-in-residence program for the center, co-authored a $2.4M grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to add ten faculty with research expertise in arts, science and technology, and created an Artist-in-Residence position for Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director, Robert Spano. As Music Department chair, I expanded the music curriculum to include the study of music technology and Asian cultural traditions which resulted in a 75% increase in the number of music majors, the majority of whom were students of color or international.
体育投注网盘口Music Composition, Conducting, and Performance
My artistic career has involved computer-assisted composition, conducting opera and contemporary music, music cognition studies, architectural acoustics, trumpet performance, and the performing arts of Indonesia, India, and Japan. Compositions, lectures, and papers have been presented at professional venues and major research centers in 27 countries including IRCAM (Paris), Radio France and the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, Conservatoire de Musique Genève (Switzerland), Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, Utrecht School of the Arts, Royal Northern College of Music (UK), Tokyo Denki and Hokkaido Universities (Japan), National University of Singapore, and University of Glasgow. I was a featured composer at the Eastman School of Music 25th Anniversary of the Eastman Computer Music Center and a senior research fellow at both the Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio, Italy and at the Liguria Study Center in Bogliasco, Italy.
Recent mixed-media compositions have included:
OPHELIA’S GAZE体育投注网盘口– a mixed-media opera collaborating with U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winning poet Natasha Trethewey, French video artist Isabelle Dehay, Paris-based soprano Katherine Blumenthal, and the Vega Quartet (90’)

FIRST LIFE– a NSF/NASA funded multimedia composition creating a sonification and visualization of stochastic models of early Earth biochemical formations – for string quartet and interactive live audio-video (90’)
At UIC, I also participated in two medical research projects examining the clinical potentials of sound and ultrasound on epilepsy and peripheral arterial disease. As a result, I was awarded a courteous faculty appointment in the Department of Neurology in the 体育投注网盘口UIC College of Medicine.
As conductor, I have presented a wide array of musical styles and genres throughout my career, including experimental music-theater, orchestral, opera, live electronic, and jazz. As Artistic Director and Conductor of the professional new music ensemble Thamyris for 18 years, I oversaw all programming and fund raising and grant writing, including receiving major awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, New Music America, Goethe Institute, Copland Foundation, and Chamber Music America. Thamyris presented over 200 contemporary works of music, dance, and theatre in the US and Germany with guest composers and performers including Ursula Oppens, Frederic Rzewski, Paul Lansky, Steve Mackey, Pauline Oliveros, Paul Moravec, Anthony Davis, Tania Leon, Alvin Singleton, York Höller, Trio Basso Cologne, and Margaret Leng Tan.
My teaching at Emory University focused on the analysis of contemporary music, interactive computer music, orchestration, music of India and Indonesia, and often involved interdisciplinary courses, including a) Metaphysics and Music co-taught with ASO Music Director Robert Spano, b) The Musical Brain with the director of the Emory Neuroscience Program, c) Creativity and Collaboration, with dance, theatre, and visual arts faculty, and d) Emory’s first Coursera online course Introduction to Digital Sound Design with 44,000 global students. In 2000-2001, I was also a Visiting Professor of Music at Princeton University where I taught composition, music theory, and a graduate seminar Hybrid Vigor in Music体育投注网盘口, a study of cultural hybridity in modern music where composers have attempted to combine Asian and Western aesthetics.
